Edinburgh Castle Wedding Inspiration + New City Venue: Le Di‑Vin

Last October, I had the joy of photographing Sanad and Michael’s wedding in Edinburgh, a stunning celebration that blended Iraqi and Scottish traditions. In this blog post, I’ll share their experience getting married at Edinburgh Castle, provide tips for wedding portraits and planning a castle wedding, and introduce a new, intimate wedding venue in town—Le Di‑Vin. I’ll also show how personal touches, like portraits in Dean Village, can make your wedding story truly unique, with cinematic photography capturing every heartfelt moment.

Planning an Edinburgh Castle Wedding

For couples dreaming of an Edinburgh Castle wedding, there are a few things to know. The castle is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic wedding venues, offering historic architecture, dramatic stone walls, and panoramic city views—a cinematic backdrop for wedding photography in Edinburgh.

Tips for Your Edinburgh Castle Ceremony:

Choose your space wisely and make sure to check their wedding brochures here:

Queen Anne Building: Elegant indoor option, up to 120 guests, with courtyard access for portraits.

St Margaret’s Chapel: Scotland’s oldest building (~1130 AD), ideal for intimate ceremonies up to 20 guests. It is only possible to host religious ceremonies here.

Gatehouse Suite: Romantic wood-panelled indoor space for ~34 guests with a private terrace. (chosen by Sanad and Michael and shown in the pictures below)

Jacobite Room: Reception-friendly with modern interiors and dramatic city views.

Schedule portrait time: The castle offers endless cinematic spots—courtyards, battlements, terraces, and balconies. Make sure your wedding photographer has time to explore these areas for epic portraits.

Consider accessibility: Some areas have stairs or uneven surfaces; plan accordingly for your guests.

Le Di‑Vin: A New Intimate Wedding Venue in Edinburgh

After the castle ceremony, Sanad and Michael celebrated at Le Di‑Vin, one of Edinburgh’s newest wedding venues. This French-inspired wine bar combines warm European character, a striking mezzanine, and architectural charm, offering a modern, intimate alternative to traditional city venues.

Hosting their first-ever wedding, Le Di‑Vin provided a space for finger-licking dining, laughter, and heartfelt conversations in a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere. For couples planning a city wedding in Edinburgh, Le Di‑Vin is a fresh and stylish option that blends elegance with intimacy, making it perfect for design-led celebrations.

Portraits: Where to Capture Your Edinburgh Castle Wedding

One of the highlights of an Edinburgh Castle wedding is the variety of portrait opportunities. Key spots include:

Private terrace: Ideal if your ceremony is in St Margaret’s Chapel, with panoramic city views.

Castle esplanade: Open space and historic stone create dramatic backdrops.

Gatehouse: Romantic indoor space opening to a terrace.

Balconies & battlements: Sweeping city and castle views for cinematic portraits.

One O’Clock Gun area: Iconic Edinburgh imagery with the castle and skyline.

After the castle portraits, we continued in Dean Village, where the couple lives. Their private garden added a personal, intimate layer, contrasting beautifully with the grandeur of the castle and creating a complete visual story.

A Wedding Full of Warmth and Joy

What truly made Sanad and Michael’s wedding unforgettable was the people who surrounded them. From the moment the day began, their guests brought such genuine warmth, kindness, and openness that it felt like being welcomed into a close-knit family. Photographing their celebration was an absolute joy — every laugh was unguarded, every embrace sincere, and every moment filled with meaning. The energy in the room carried through the toasts, the dances, and all the quiet in-between moments, creating a collection of images that reflect real connection, deep love, and pure happiness.

Their wedding beautifully showed how an Edinburgh Castle celebration can balance historic grandeur with deeply personal details. The reception at Le Di-Vin brought an intimate, modern feel that perfectly complemented the day. It was a day that felt rich with history, not just in its setting, but in the relationships and memories being honored and created.
